Harvested from the Litsea Cubeba plant, May Chang essential oil offers a wealth of benefits. The Litsea Cubeba is a deciduous tree, also known as the Chinese Pepper and Mountain Pepper. It belongs to the Lauraceae family and is native to China, Indonesia and some other areas of South-east Asia. Litsea Cubeba is actually the botanical name of the plant and the oil is often referred to by this name.

The essential oil of May Chang is obtained from the pepper-like fruits of the tree. The oil can also be obtained from the leaves but it is of an inferior quality as compared to that of the fruit. Produced by the steam- distillation method, the enticing fragrance of the oil makes it popular in the cosmetic and perfume industry. The oil has a medium strength aroma and a distinct refreshing lemony fragrance with fruity undertones. The crisp aroma of the oil is often compared to that of lemongrass, though it is sweeter than the latter.
