This beautiful plant grows in abundance around Mirboo North, Victoria, where it has a history of therapeutic use with the local Kurnai Elders, noting traditional applications. Balm mint bush (Prostanthera melissifolia) has been used in Australia for many years for warding off insects, purifying the air, and even using the soothing vapours for helping with respiratory ailments.

The essential oil has a unique fragrance that is rich and minty with crisp eucalyptus notes. It is rich in menthol making it a great substitute for eucalyptus. Balm mint bush is kid-safe so it is a perfect option for respiratory support blends for children. It is an erect shrub with hairy branches, egg-shaped leaves with fine teeth on the edges and mauve to purple or pink flowers on the ends of branchlets.
